Admin Notices Explained
Troubleshooting Free & ProFree + Pro. Notices marked Pro come from Learnomy Pro.
Learnomy shows a notice at the top of an admin screen only when something needs your attention or has changed. Each notice has a What to do link that opens its section on this page. Every section tells you when the notice shows, whether anything is lost, what to do, and how the notice goes away.
Most notices only appear for administrators, and only on the Learnomy screens where you can act on them. A notice with a close button (the x on its right) can be hidden. If the problem is still there, it comes back after a while, so a hidden notice never hides a problem for good.
Payments and memberships#
Paid course with no way to pay#
The notice: "The paid course Course name is live, but buyers cannot pay for it yet because no payment method is set up. Nothing is lost: it starts selling as soon as you connect one."
When it shows: after you publish a paid course while no payment method is turned on. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, course, commerce and settings screens.
What it means: visitors can see the course, but the checkout has no way to take their money.
Is anything lost? No. The course and its settings are fine. Buyers just cannot check out until a payment method is on.
What to do:
- Click Set up payments in the notice, or go to Learnomy Settings > Payments.
- Connect Stripe or PayPal, or turn on WooCommerce checkout if your store runs on WooCommerce.
- Save the settings.
How it goes away: as soon as a payment method is on, the notice clears by itself. Closing it hides it for you until another paid course is published without a way to pay.
Test payment option turned off#
The notice: "Learnomy switched off the Test payment option."
When it shows: once, after an update, on any admin screen, to administrators.
What it means: earlier versions turned the Test payment option on by default. That option completes a checkout without charging a card, so on a live site a buyer could get a paid course for free. The update turned it off on sites that never chose it.
Is anything lost? No. Your Stripe, PayPal and WooCommerce settings are unchanged, and past orders stay as they are.
What to do:
- If this is your live site, do nothing. This is the safe setting.
- If this is a staging or demo site and you used the Test option on purpose, go to Learnomy Settings > Payments and switch it back on.
How it goes away: it shows once and does not come back.
Test payment mode is on#
The notice: "Learnomy is in test payment mode." On a site where WooCommerce runs checkout, it reads "Test payment mode is on, but WooCommerce is handling checkout."
When it shows: while the Test payment option is on. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, course and commerce screens. It does not show on the Settings screen, which already says so on the Payments tab.
What it means: buyers who pick the Test option get practice orders. No card is charged, the order is recorded at $0, and it is kept out of your revenue reports. With WooCommerce checkout on, WooCommerce takes the real payments and the Test option has no effect until you turn WooCommerce checkout off.
Is anything lost? No.
What to do:
- On a staging or demo site, nothing. Close the notice if it is in the way.
- When you are ready to sell, go to Learnomy Settings > Payments, connect Stripe or PayPal, and turn the Test option off.
How it goes away: turning the Test option off removes it. Closing it hides it for 14 days.
Cancelled subscriptions may still be billing#
The notice: "N cancelled subscriptions may still be billing a customer."
When it shows: when a subscription was cancelled in Learnomy but Stripe or PayPal did not confirm the cancellation after several tries. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, course, commerce and settings screens.
What it means: Learnomy has already ended the member's access, but the payment provider may still charge them on the next billing date. It is shown as a warning because acting soon matters.
Is anything lost? Nothing is lost on your site. A customer may be charged for something they cancelled if the subscription is still running at Stripe or PayPal.
What to do:
- Click Review them in the notice. It opens Commerce > Subscriptions filtered to just these subscriptions.
- For each one, open the subscription in your Stripe or PayPal dashboard and cancel it there.
- Back in Learnomy, click Mark as stopped on that row (or on the subscription's own screen) and confirm. This does not contact Stripe or PayPal; it records that you handled it, in the audit log too.
- If the customer was already charged after cancelling, refund that payment in Stripe or PayPal.
How it goes away: Learnomy cannot see inside your Stripe or PayPal account, so it keeps listing these subscriptions until you mark each one as stopped. The count drops as you go, and the notice disappears when none are left. Closing it hides it for 3 days while some remain.
Memberships paid for after they ended#
The notice: "N memberships were paid for after they had ended."
When it shows: when your payment provider charged a member after their membership was cancelled or had expired in Learnomy. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, course, commerce and settings screens.
What it means: a cancelled or expired membership stays ended. The late payment does not give access back, so you decide what happens next.
Is anything lost? No. The payment is recorded and the member's history is kept.
What to do:
- Click Review them in the notice to open the affected memberships.
- For each member, either refund the payment with your payment provider, or start a new membership for them so they get access for what they paid.
How it goes away: each payment drops off the list 30 days after it arrived, and the notice clears when the list is empty. Closing it hides it for 3 days.
Prices moved to one currency#
The notice: "Learnomy now sells everything in USD. N prices were set in another currency. They keep the same number, now in USD, so check they are still right."
When it shows: after an update or a currency change, when some plans were priced in a different currency from your site currency. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, Settings, Memberships and Space Plans screens.
What it means: Learnomy sells in one currency. A plan that was priced at 50 EUR is now 50 in your site currency. The number did not change, only the currency.
Is anything lost? No. Subscriptions that are already running keep billing what the subscriber agreed to until they are replaced.
What to do:
- Click Show which in the notice to see the plans that changed.
- Click Review prices and update any price that is no longer right in the new currency.
How it goes away: click Dismiss in the notice when you have checked the prices.
Payments need a look after the last update#
The notice: "Payments need a look after the last update." It can carry one or two lines: that your payment provider reported a payment twice and the extra record was set aside, and that Learnomy could not switch on its protection against recording one payment twice.
When it shows: after an update, only to administrators, and only on the Learnomy dashboard, Settings and Transactions screens.
What it means: the update adds a guard so one provider payment can only be recorded once. If your existing records already held duplicates, the extra ones were set aside, never deleted or refunded. If the guard could not be added, the notice names the reason.
What to do:
- Click Open Transactions and check the payments in question.
- Check that no student was enrolled twice for the same payment.
- If the notice says the protection could not be switched on, send the code shown to support.
How it goes away: click Dismiss once you have checked.
An automation uses an old instruction#
The notice: "One of your automations uses an old instruction that stops working in the next Learnomy release."
When it shows: for 30 days after an outside tool (Zapier, Make, a script) last sent Learnomy the old "purchase" or "refund" instruction. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, course, commerce and settings screens.
What it means: the old instruction still works today, but the next release removes it. The old "purchase" instruction also records a sale in Learnomy for money your store took, so your revenue counts it twice.
Is anything lost? No. Nothing has failed and no one has lost access.
What to do:
- Open Details for whoever set up the automation in the notice. It names the old instruction and the date it was last received.
- In your Zapier, Make or other tool, find the step that sends to Learnomy.
- Change
op: purchasetoop: grant, orop: refundtoop: revoke, keeping the sameexternal_ref. A step that sends noopat all counts asop: purchase, so addop: grantto it. - Run the automation once and check the Access Log under Learnomy Settings.
How it goes away: 30 days after the last old instruction arrives. Closing it hides it for 7 days.
Site setup#
Another page uses a Learnomy address#
The notice: "Some Learnomy pages are not opening at their usual address." If two of your own Learnomy addresses are the same, it reads "Two Learnomy pages share the same address." The same problem is listed in Tools > Site Health.
When it shows: when another plugin, a leftover rule from a removed plugin, or a second Learnomy setting answers one of Learnomy's web addresses first. Administrators see it on Learnomy screens and in Site Health.
What it means: a visitor going to that address sees something else, for example another plugin's archive, instead of your course catalog or account pages. The notice lists each address and what answers it now.
Is anything lost? No. Your courses and settings are untouched. Visitors simply cannot reach those pages at those addresses until it is fixed.
What to do:
- Read the list in the notice to see which addresses are affected.
- If two Learnomy addresses are the same, go to Learnomy Settings > URLs & Pages and give one of them a different value.
- If another plugin owns the address, either give Learnomy a different address in Learnomy Settings > URLs & Pages, or turn off the other plugin. The notice tells you when an address cannot be changed in Learnomy.
- If the notice says the rule comes from a plugin that is no longer installed, go to Settings > Permalinks and click Save Changes.
How it goes away: it disappears as soon as Learnomy answers all its addresses again. It cannot be closed, because a store nobody can browse should not be hidden.
Handout folder needs one server rule#
The notice: "Your web host can add one more lock to the handout folder."
When it shows: when your lessons have handouts and your server does not refuse direct requests to the private handout folder. This is normal on nginx servers. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, course and commerce screens and in Tools > Site Health.
What it means: handouts are already private. They are stored on an unguessable path, and Learnomy only opens them after checking that the person may see the lesson. The extra server rule would also block anyone who somehow had the direct path.
Is anything lost? No. Nothing is broken for students.
What to do:
- Click Get the message to send your host. It opens Learnomy Settings > Advanced > Tools.
- Click Copy message for my host and paste it into a support ticket with your hosting company. It tells them exactly what to add.
- You do not need to change any files yourself.
How it goes away: once your host adds the rule, Learnomy sees it and the notice and the Site Health item clear by themselves. Closing the notice hides it for 14 days.
Certificate PDF files missing#
The notice: "Certificate PDF downloads are using the browser instead."
When it shows: when the Certificates module is on but some of Learnomy's files for building PDFs are missing, usually after an incomplete upload. Administrators see it on Learnomy screens.
What it means: certificates still work. Instead of downloading a PDF, a member sees a printable certificate page and saves it as a PDF from the browser.
Is anything lost? No. Every certificate is still there.
What to do:
- Download the latest Learnomy zip.
- Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, upload it, and choose Replace current with uploaded. Your settings and courses are kept.
How it goes away: it clears once the files are back. Closing it hides it for 14 days.
License and update files missing#
The notice: "Learnomy cannot check for updates right now."
When it shows: when some of Learnomy's files for license checks and updates are missing, usually after an incomplete upload or a security scanner removing a file. Users who can manage plugins see it on Learnomy screens and the Plugins screen.
What it means: your site keeps working. Only license checks and automatic updates are off.
Is anything lost? No. Courses, members and settings are not affected.
What to do:
- Download the latest Learnomy zip.
- Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, upload it, and choose Replace current with uploaded.
- If a security scanner removed the file, ask it to allow the Learnomy plugin folder.
How it goes away: it clears once the files are back. Closing it hides it for 14 days.
Course published with no lessons#
The notice: "Published. Course name has no lessons yet, so a student who enrolls now sees an empty curriculum."
When it shows: once, right after you publish a course that has no lessons, to the person who published it.
What it means: the course is live, but there is nothing in it yet.
Is anything lost? No.
What to do:
- Add lessons to the course, or
- Switch it back to draft until it is ready.
How it goes away: it shows once. Sites that always import courses before lessons can turn it off with the learnomy_warn_on_empty_publish filter.
Emails and connections#
Learnomy emails paused#
The notice: "Learnomy emails paused", shown in the admin toolbar at the top of every screen.
When it shows: while Pause all emails is on in Learnomy Settings > Emails. Administrators see it on every screen, including the front of the site, so it is not forgotten.
What it means: Learnomy is not sending emails, such as enrollment and receipt emails. Notifications still appear in each person's bell, and emails about payouts and withdrawals still send.
Is anything lost? Emails that would have gone out while paused are not sent later. Bell notifications are kept.
What to do:
- Hover over Learnomy emails paused in the toolbar and click Turn emails back on, or go to Learnomy Settings > Emails.
- Switch Pause all emails off and save.
How it goes away: as soon as emails are turned back on.
Webhooks paused#
The notice: "N webhooks are paused because their addresses stopped answering."
When it shows: when a webhook address failed to accept an update. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard and Settings screens.
What it means: Learnomy stopped sending updates to that address so it does not keep failing.
Is anything lost? Updates that happen while a webhook is paused are not sent to it later. Nothing in Learnomy itself is lost.
What to do:
- Click Open Webhooks in the notice. Paused webhooks are marked in the list.
- Check that the address is right and that the service behind it is running.
- Click Test on the webhook. A successful test turns it back on.
How it goes away: a successful test or delivery turns the webhook back on, and the notice clears when none are paused. Closing it hides it for 14 days.
Learnomy Pro#
Learnomy Pro needs Learnomy#
Pro. The notice: "Learnomy Pro is paused until Learnomy is active."
When it shows: when Learnomy Pro is active but the free Learnomy plugin is not. Users who can manage plugins see it on every admin screen.
What it means: Pro adds to the free plugin and cannot run on its own.
Is anything lost? No. Your Pro settings and data are kept.
What to do:
- Click Go to Plugins.
- Install and activate Learnomy.
How it goes away: as soon as Learnomy is active, Pro starts again.
Learnomy Pro needs a newer Learnomy#
Pro. The notice: "Learnomy Pro is paused until Learnomy is updated."
When it shows: when Learnomy Pro was updated before the free Learnomy plugin. Users who can update plugins see it on every admin screen.
What it means: this Pro version uses parts of Learnomy that the older version does not have, so Pro waits instead of breaking your site. The free plugin keeps working.
Is anything lost? No. Your Pro settings and data are kept.
What to do:
- Click Updates, or go to Dashboard > Updates.
- Update Learnomy to the same version as Learnomy Pro.
How it goes away: as soon as both are on matching versions.
H5P plugin not active#
Pro. The notice: "Learnomy H5P is on, but the free H5P plugin is not active yet, so lessons cannot use H5P content."
When it shows: when the H5P extension is on in Learnomy Pro but the official H5P plugin is not active. Users who can install plugins see it on Learnomy screens.
What it means: H5P content is not offered in the lesson editor yet. Everything else works. See H5P Interactive Content for how the two plugins work together.
Is anything lost? No.
What to do:
- Click Install H5P, then install and activate the H5P plugin.
- Or, if you do not plan to use H5P, turn the H5P extension off under Learnomy Settings > Modules.
How it goes away: as soon as H5P is active. Closing it hides it for good for you.
WP Fusion not connected#
Pro. The notice: "WP Fusion is not connected to your CRM yet, so Learnomy tags are not being sent."
When it shows: when the WP Fusion extension is on and WP Fusion is active but not connected to a CRM. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard and Settings screens.
What it means: course, quiz, membership and certificate tag rules are saved, but nothing reaches your CRM until WP Fusion is connected.
Is anything lost? Your saved tag rules are kept. Tags for activity that happens before you connect are not sent later.
What to do:
- Click WP Fusion settings in the notice.
- Choose your CRM and connect it.
How it goes away: as soon as WP Fusion is connected. Closing it hides it for 14 days.
Store or membership plugin needs an update#
Pro. The notice: "Learnomy is not giving access from WooCommerce yet: it needs WooCommerce 8.2 or newer, and this site has 7.9. Access already given stays. Update WooCommerce to turn this on." The store name and versions match your site.
When it shows: when the Store and membership bridges module is on and a store or membership plugin it connects to (WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, Restrict Content Pro, Paid Memberships Pro or MemberPress) is older than the version Learnomy works with. Administrators see it on the Learnomy dashboard, Modules and Plugins screens.
What it means: Learnomy has switched off its connection to that plugin for now, so new orders or memberships there do not give Learnomy access until the plugin is updated.
Is anything lost? No. Access already given stays, product mappings stay saved, and nothing breaks.
What to do:
- Go to Dashboard > Updates (or Plugins) and update the plugin named in the notice.
- For orders or memberships from while it was off, give the access from the student's profile in Learnomy. In WooCommerce you can also complete the order again; in Restrict Content Pro, renew the membership.
How it goes away: as soon as the plugin is updated. Closing it hides it for 30 days.
