Sell Learnomy access with Easy Digital Downloads

Pro feature

Pro feature. Part of the Store and membership bridges module in Learnomy Pro.

Sell your courses as Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) products. When an order is completed, the buyer gets the Learnomy access you picked on that download: one course or a bundle of courses, membership plans, learning paths, Spaces and cohorts. EDD keeps the money, the taxes, the discounts and the receipts. Learnomy only gives access.

Before you start#

  • Easy Digital Downloads 3.0 or newer is active. EDD Recurring Payments is optional.
  • Turn on Store and membership bridges under Learnomy Settings > Modules. It is off until you turn it on, and with it on nothing happens until you map a download.

Pick what a download unlocks#

  1. Open a download in Downloads > Edit Download.
  2. Find the Learnomy access box, under Download Details.
  3. Choose a kind of access (Course, Membership plan, Learning path, Space, Cohort), type a few letters of its name and pick it from the list. Repeat for each item.
  4. Update the download.

The picks show as chips grouped by kind, with a line saying what the download gives. If two picks give the same course (a course on its own and inside a membership plan, say), a note says so: the buyer gets that course once, and keeps it while either pick is active.

Only site administrators see the Learnomy access box. A shop manager can still edit the download, but cannot change what it unlocks.

What happens with each order#

In Easy Digital Downloads In Learnomy
Order is Completed The buyer gets everything picked on the downloads in the order. A guest buyer gets an account made from the order email; an email that already has an account gets the access on that account. One "Your access is ready" email lists everything.
The same order is completed again Nothing new. Each order gives access once.
Order is Pending or Failed Nothing. EDD handles payment retries.
Partially Refunded Access stays.
Refunded (the whole order) or Revoked Access from that order ends. Access the buyer has from another order, a membership or anywhere else stays.
An EDD Recurring download Access belongs to the subscription, not to the order, and the Access Log shows it as Subscription with its number. Renewal payments add nothing.
An EDD Recurring subscription is Cancelled or Expired A cancelled subscription keeps access until its expiration date; then the subscription's access ends.
The first order of a subscription is Refunded or Revoked The subscription's access ends at once.
A one-off download bought in the same order as a subscription It keeps its own access when the subscription ends.

An order with more than three items to give is handled in the background, a few seconds after it completes, so checkout stays fast.

When a course is already for sale#

  • Sold at Learnomy's checkout (Stripe, PayPal): the course is saved on the download, and a note tells you buyers can now pay in two places.
  • Access granted externally with no link set: the course's button now links to the download, so visitors go to your store to buy. You can change the link in the course's pricing settings.

The block editor saves without reloading the page, so these notes show the next time you open an admin screen.

See what was given, and fix it#

Every grant from an EDD order is listed in Learnomy Settings > Access Log with the order number. Search by the buyer's email or the order number. If access was refused, the row says why, for example a full Space or a course that was deleted. From there you can try again, give it anyway, or take an active grant back. Taking it back sticks: the same order does not give it again, but a new order does.

If Easy Digital Downloads is switched off#

Access already given stays. The Learnomy access box and the order events stop until EDD is active again. If your EDD is older than 3.0, a note on the Learnomy dashboard, Modules and Plugins screens says the bridge is waiting for an update.

Instructor earnings#

A sale made through Easy Digital Downloads is not a Learnomy sale, so it creates no commission for any instructor. Easy Digital Downloads keeps the money and Learnomy only gives access. If you promise instructors a share of these sales, pay it from Easy Digital Downloads. Sales made through Learnomy's own checkout do create commissions. See Commissions and Earnings.

Not in this version#

Orders completed before you mapped a download do not give access. Give access from the student's profile for buyers who bought before the download was mapped.
