How to Sell Courses From Your Existing Store with Learnomy2:40Chapters and transcript

Pro feature. Part of the Store and membership bridges module in Learnomy Pro.

Sell your courses as ordinary WooCommerce products. When an order is paid, the buyer gets the Learnomy access you picked on that product: one course or a bundle of courses, membership plans, learning paths, Spaces and cohorts. WooCommerce keeps the money, the taxes, the coupons and the receipts. Learnomy only gives access.

This is different from Learnomy's own checkout. If you turned on WooCommerce Checkout under Learnomy Settings > Settings > Payments, Learnomy's checkout sends buyers through WooCommerce to pay for a Learnomy price. That route records the sale in Learnomy. The bridge on this page does the opposite: your WooCommerce product and its price are the sale, and Learnomy records only the access. The two never handle the same order line.

Before you start#

  • WooCommerce 8.2 or newer is active. WooCommerce Subscriptions is optional.
  • Turn on Store and membership bridges under Learnomy Settings > Modules. It is off until you turn it on, and with it on nothing happens until you map a product.

Pick what a product unlocks#

  1. Open a product in Products > Edit product.
  2. In Product data, open the Learnomy access tab.
  3. Choose a kind of access (Course, Membership plan, Learning path, Space, Cohort), type a few letters of its name and pick it from the list. Repeat for each item.
  4. Save the product.

The picks show as chips grouped by kind, with a line saying what the product gives. If two picks give the same course (a course on its own and inside a membership plan, say), a note says so: the buyer gets that course once, and keeps it while either pick is active.

Only site administrators see the Learnomy access tab.

What happens with each order#

In WooCommerce In Learnomy
Order is paid: Processing or Completed The buyer gets everything picked on the products in the order. A card or PayPal payment for a virtual product leaves the order in Processing, and access starts then, without you completing the order. A guest buyer gets an account made from the billing email. One "Your access is ready" email lists everything. On hold and Pending payment give nothing yet.
The same order is completed after Processing, or paid again Nothing new. Each order gives access once.
Partial refund Access stays.
Full refund, or the order is Refunded or Cancelled Access from that order ends. Access the buyer has from another order, a membership or anywhere else stays.
A WooCommerce Subscriptions subscription Access belongs to the subscription, not to one order, and the Access Log shows it as Subscription with its number. Renewals add nothing. A failed payment (On hold) changes nothing: WooCommerce handles retries.
The member cancels the subscription Access stays until the time already paid for runs out (the subscription is Pending cancellation), then ends. If you cancel it from the admin, access ends then.
The member switches to another product (upgrade, downgrade or crossgrade) What the old product gave ends and what the new product gives starts.
A subscription's order or renewal is fully refunded The subscription's access ends at once. The next paid renewal gives it back.
A one-off product bought in the same order as a subscription It keeps its own access when the subscription ends.

An order with more than three items to give is handled in the background, a few seconds after it is paid, so checkout stays fast.

When a course is already for sale#

  • Sold through Learnomy's WooCommerce checkout: you cannot also pick that course on a product, or buyers would have two ways to buy the same course. Save shows a message naming the course; everything else on the product is saved. To sell it as the product instead, set the course's pricing to Access granted externally and pick it again.
  • Sold at Learnomy's checkout with another payment method (Stripe, PayPal): the course is saved on the product, and a note tells you buyers can now pay in two places.
  • Access granted externally with no link set: the course's button now links to the product, so visitors go to your store to buy. You can change the link in the course's pricing settings.

See what was given, and fix it#

Every grant from WooCommerce is listed in Learnomy Settings > Access Log with its order or subscription number. Search by the buyer's email or that number. If access was refused, the row says why, for example a full Space or an order with no email address. From there you can try again, give it anyway, or take an active grant back. Taking it back sticks: completing the same order again does not give it back, but a new order does.

If WooCommerce is switched off#

Access already given stays. The Learnomy access tab and the order events stop until WooCommerce is active again. If your WooCommerce is older than 8.2, a note on the Learnomy dashboard, Modules and Plugins screens says the bridge is waiting for an update.

Instructor earnings#

A sale made through WooCommerce is not a Learnomy sale, so it creates no commission for any instructor. WooCommerce keeps the money and Learnomy only gives access. If you promise instructors a share of these sales, pay it from WooCommerce. Sales made through Learnomy's own checkout do create commissions. See Commissions and Earnings.

Not in this version#

Orders placed before you mapped a product do not give access. Re-complete an order, or give access from the student's profile, for buyers who bought before the product was mapped.
