What actually sends people looking
LearnWorlds attracts people who care about the lesson itself, and the reasons for leaving tend to be practical rather than about quality.
One is cost shape. A hosted subscription is a recurring line, and people add up what they pay over a year against what a self-hosted setup would cost. Another is the school site. LearnWorlds gives you one, and some teams would rather their courses live inside a site they already run, under the same domain and design.
A third is ownership. Student records, purchases and progress on a hosted platform are yours to export, but they live on someone else’s system. Some people want them in their own database from day one.
Decide about video first
Before comparing anything else, ask whether interactive video is doing real work in your courses.
If lessons depend on video that pauses to ask questions or branches on answers, treat that as the deciding factor. LearnWorlds is known for it. Learnomy does it differently: Pro bridges content made with the official H5P plugin into a lesson, and H5P has an interactive video type. It is capable, but it means installing a second plugin and learning its editor. Build one lesson that way and watch how it feels before you move anything.
If your video is mostly plain playback with a quiz after it, this stops mattering, and Learnomy’s quizzes, six question types in two layouts, are free.
A video test you can run in an afternoon
Reading about H5P tells you little about whether your lessons will survive the move. Run a test with a lesson you actually teach.
- Pick one lesson that depends on interactive video, with questions that appear at set moments.
- Install the official H5P plugin and Learnomy Pro on a staging site.
- Rebuild the lesson in the H5P editor, using the interactive video content type.
- Attach it to a Learnomy lesson as an H5P lesson and publish.
- Open it as a student and answer the questions, including a wrong one.
- Check that the lesson marks itself complete, and that the course progress moves.
Do the same for a lesson with a quiz after the video, because that combination is the most common and the easiest to get slightly wrong. Watch for two things. One is how long step three took compared with the original, because that is the cost per lesson. The other is whether you miss anything that the original did, such as branching or a particular overlay. H5P keeps the score in its own store, so a score you want in a report may need a separate look.
SCORM and standards content
If you have SCORM packages, this is where Learnomy has a concrete answer. Pro lets you upload SCORM 1.2 or 2004 packages as a lesson type, and completion and score flow into progress. Pro also emits xAPI statements to your learning record store. That is send-only, so Learnomy does not read from an LRS.
All of this is Pro. The free plugin has none of it. Check what your current plan covers on learnworlds.com before assuming the two products line up.
SCORM in practice
If you bought or built SCORM packages, the move is kinder than the rest of this page. Pro lets you attach a SCORM 1.2 or 2004 package to any lesson as a zip. The package runs in the lesson player, and its completion status and score feed course progress and certificates like a native lesson.
SCORM is an opt-in module, so switch it on under Modules before you look for the lesson type. The package size limit defaults to 100 MB, and a developer can raise it. Learners resume where the package says they stopped. If you want, you can stop the Mark Complete button from working until the package itself reports completion, which is how many compliance courses are run.
A tracking report shows each learner’s status, score and time on task, and it exports to CSV. Only the site owner sees it by default, because it holds per-learner data. Other standards, such as AICC, are not supported.
Hosting your videos without a platform
On a hosted platform, video hosting is part of the package. In Learnomy, a video lesson plays a link from a service you already use, such as YouTube, Vimeo or Loom, in a player that records how much of the video a student has watched. You can also add audio, PDF, download and embed lessons.
Learnomy has no streaming service of its own, and no built-in protected or DRM video. A protected video lesson type appears only when the MediaShield plugin is active. If your content is paid and must not be shared, decide how it will be hosted and protected before you rebuild, and test that approach with one lesson.
Budget for that hosting as a separate cost. It is one of the quieter ways a hosted bundle saves money.
Standards beyond SCORM
Some schools need more than SCORM. Pro also sends xAPI statements to a learning record store, but it only sends them. It does not read anything back. Pro includes an LTI 1.3 tool provider, which lets another institution’s LMS launch a Learnomy course and receive grades back. That feature is in beta and off by default, so treat it as something to test thoroughly.
If you have assessments written in a standards format, Pro can import QTI 2.x and 3.0 into the question bank, where they become ordinary questions that play in the normal quiz player.
None of this is part of the free plugin. The free versus Pro page lists where the line falls, and the blog has plain explanations of SCORM versus xAPI and of H5P in a WordPress LMS.
What moving from LearnWorlds involves
There is no automated importer, so here is the route as it is:
- Export your student list from LearnWorlds. Check learnworlds.com for what the export includes.
- Rebuild your courses in Learnomy by hand.
- Bulk enrol students into each course by pasting emails or uploading a CSV. Accounts are created for anyone who does not have one.
- For students who already finished, set the course to Manual Completion and mark them complete, which issues their certificate.
- For a large school, script it through the REST API or the incoming enrolment webhook, or plan it as a custom migration.
Interactive video lessons are the part to budget extra time for, since they have to be rebuilt in H5P rather than copied.
Your school pages without a site builder
A LearnWorlds school arrives with a site builder. On WordPress you build the school from your theme and page builder, and Learnomy supplies the course parts: a catalog, course pages, a student account area and checkout. It ships blocks and matching shortcodes, including a course grid, My Courses and search, which you place on any page.
Plan the design before you rebuild lessons. A clean theme, one sales page per course and a clear catalogue are enough to start, and you can refine them later. Pro adds an Elementor theme builder for people who design visually.
Students on phones are a separate check. Learnomy has an installable web app mode with offline progress sync, which is in beta, so test it on your own phone before you tell anyone about it. Open every sales page and lesson at a narrow width too.
If you have never built a WordPress site, give this part the most time. It is the largest change in daily work.
A normal week for a video-led school
If your teaching is video-led, the weekly work is mostly content. You publish new lessons, check that embeds still play, and read the questions students leave in lesson comments. Grading is light when quizzes are auto-marked, and Free handles essay answers through a grading inbox.
Each week, look at which lessons students abandon. Learnomy records how much of a video a student watched, and the reports show completions by course, so you can see where interest drops. That is a better guide to rewriting a lesson than a hunch.
Updates and backups take a few minutes. If you teach live, the schedule and join link on a live lesson tell students when to arrive, and the recording goes up as an ordinary video lesson afterwards.
Who should stay with LearnWorlds
Stay if the interactive video is the course. If students learn by answering inside the video, and that is why they buy, then rebuilding it in another tool is a risk to the product, not a tidy-up.
Stay if you have a large library of lessons built with the platform’s own tools. Rebuilding hundreds of them is a year of work, and it gains you nothing a student can see.
Stay if your team has no one who wants to run WordPress. The cost of a poorly maintained site is higher than the cost of a subscription.
What it costs to run each side
A hosted subscription bundles hosting, the site builder, the video features and support into one line. A WordPress academy splits them: hosting, a theme, video hosting if you want it, an email tool, and Pro if you need standards content or cohorts.
Learnomy Free has no licence cost, and Pro is annual or a one-time lifetime purchase. For LearnWorlds, take today’s plan price from learnworlds.com, and check which plan includes the features you actually use. Plans change, so we leave the figures out.
Run the sum over three years, not one. Then ask whether the time you spend on the site is time you would otherwise spend teaching.
Your records and who holds them
On WordPress, accounts, enrolments, progress, orders and certificates are rows in your database. Reports and CSV exports come from there, and other plugins can read the same data.
Privacy requests are handled through WordPress. Learnomy adds exporters and erasers for the data it holds. Learner data is erased on request, financial rows are kept but unlinked from the person, and a deleted student’s certificate stops verifying.
For SCORM learners, the tracking records sit in the same database, so they are included in your backups and in your own data protection work.
What Learnomy does not do for you
Learnomy has no built-in interactive video editor, no site builder, no built-in email marketing and no marketplace. It has no built-in live video: a live session lesson holds a join link and a schedule for a meeting tool you run yourself. There is no built-in single sign-on and no native mobile app, although a REST API with token sign-in lets a developer build one.
The importer reads only LearnDash, Tutor LMS and LifterLMS. A LearnWorlds school is rebuilt, as described above.
A first thirty days
Treat the first month as a test of the hardest lesson, not the easiest. Week one is the H5P and video test above. Week two is rebuilding one full course around the result. Week three is a trial with real students, enrolled in bulk from your exported list. Week four is the decision: move the rest, move some, or stay.
If the video test fails, you have your answer for the price of a few hours. If it passes, you have a template for every other lesson. Either way, write down what you decided and why, so that the choice is not reopened every time a launch gets stressful. Run your SCORM packages through a single course early, since a package that misbehaves is easier to find before you have fifty of them.
Where this leaves the decision
LearnWorlds earns its place for video-led teaching and an all-in-one school. If that describes you, stay, or look at another hosted platform.
If your main reasons are owning the site and keeping the data, a WordPress LMS fits, and Learnomy is free to try. Build one real course on a staging site, including a video lesson, and judge from that.
