What Teachable sells, and what you must add
Teachable’s own site lists a course builder with video, quizzes and drip, plus coaching, digital downloads, memberships, a community option, completion certificates and student apps for phones. Its checkout, Teachable Payments, offers many local payment methods and handles sales tax, VAT and GST in many countries. Upsells and order bumps are part of the pitch too.
Learnomy covers the core of that list, and you should know where it stops. It has courses, quizzes, certificates, memberships, coupons, a download lesson type and a scheduled live-session lesson. It has no coaching booking tool, no digital product shop separate from courses, no upsell or order-bump screens and no ready-made phone app. Tax is one flat rate, and per-region VAT is delegated to WooCommerce if you use it as a gateway.
Building and pricing one course
In Learnomy Free you create the course, choose how it is sold, and build sections and lessons. The pricing choices are broad: free, one-time, recurring, members-only, fixed-term access that ends and can be renewed with progress kept, access granted from outside, or invite-only. Pro adds scheduled drip, cohorts and learning paths.
Teachable’s pricing page lists its plans and what each includes. We saw that memberships appear on every plan there, while community does not, so check the live page before comparing a plan against Learnomy Free.
The money path
A buyer on a Learnomy course page clicks Buy and lands on a single checkout. They see the order summary, apply a coupon if they have one, fill in billing details and pay. Stripe takes the card on the page itself, and PayPal sends them out and back. Once the payment clears they are enrolled and see a thank-you page and a receipt.
Some bank-based methods settle later, and Learnomy waits for the money to clear before it opens the course. Guest checkout is off until you switch it on.
Learnomy takes no share of a sale. Teachable’s pricing page describes a transaction fee on its entry plan and none on the higher ones when you use its own payments, with normal processing fees on top. Exact figures change, so read the page the day you decide.
A student’s first week and the student list
On Learnomy a student buys, receives a confirmation email with a receipt, and signs in to an account area with a dashboard, their course library and order history. They open lesson one in a full-screen player, take quizzes along the way and download their certificate at the end. The site looks like your site, with your domain and theme, rather than a Teachable school page. What they do not get is a dedicated phone app, so test the lesson player on a small screen before launch.
Everything about a student on Learnomy is in your WordPress database: account, orders, progress, quiz attempts, certificates. Free exports students and transactions as CSV. A person can ask for their data or its erasure through WordPress’s personal data tools, and removing the plugin keeps the data unless you opt in to deleting it.
With Teachable, the vendor holds it. A student list export is usually possible, so ask which fields come out before you trust it for a move.
Running costs in time and skill
- Teachable removes hosting from your list. Learnomy puts it back.
- You pick a WordPress host and a theme, and you keep plugins current.
- A first course on Learnomy takes an afternoon if WordPress is familiar.
- Email marketing is a separate tool in both cases, as Teachable’s own page points to integrations with email platforms.
Who should not switch
Stay if you want a quick launch with the least technical work, a ready-made student app, built-in tax handling in many countries, or coaching and downloads in the same shop. Teachable is simply further along there.
Switch if you want the quiz depth, public certificate verification and records in your own database, and you are comfortable with WordPress.
A staging checklist
There is no importer for Teachable. Rebuild the course by hand, or script a big catalogue against the REST API or WP-CLI.
- Export your student list and purchases from Teachable.
- Build one course on a staging copy with Learnomy Free.
- Set up Stripe or PayPal in test mode and buy it yourself.
- Bulk enrol existing students by pasted emails or CSV.
- Mark finished students complete by hand.
- Redirect your old course URLs only when the new ones work.
