Rolling out one compliance course
Imagine you must get sixty employees through a safety course by the end of the quarter, with proof. In TalentLMS, that is the job it is built for. Its own site describes separate training portals for employees, partners or customers, ready-made content through a course library, a compliance course bundle and a mobile learning app, plus GDPR compliance and ISO certifications.
In Learnomy, you build the course in Free, mark it invite-only so nobody can enrol themselves, and mark it unlisted so it stays out of the public catalogue. Those are two separate settings, and you want both. Then you paste the staff emails or upload a CSV on the course screen. Accounts are created for anyone who lacks one, people already enrolled are skipped, and a summary tells you what happened.
Staff finish a graded quiz and receive a signed certificate with a public verification page, so an auditor can check it without asking you.
Single sign-on, settled
The existing page makes two statements here, and both hold up.
On the Learnomy side, there is no built-in single sign-on: no SAML and no OpenID Connect login in either Free or Pro. Learnomy uses WordPress accounts. It does include a helper that sets up members who arrive already authenticated elsewhere, and in Pro an LTI 1.3 tool provider, still in beta and off by default, lets another learning system launch learners into a course. A WordPress login plugin can sit in front, but that is a component you choose and test yourself.
On the TalentLMS side, its own help center documents SSO with SAML 2.0 and with OpenID Connect, with separate guides for several identity providers. One guide says login is started from TalentLMS rather than from the identity provider. Which plans include it can change, so ask the vendor.
If SSO is a hard requirement on day one, that alone may decide the matter.
Reports, proof and where the data lives
Free gives you quiz statistics, CSV exports of students and transactions, and the certificate verification page. Pro adds an analytics dashboard with CSV and PDF export, and a gradebook with weighted grades and CSV export. If you give a team a shared seat pool, Learning Spaces reports can be exported as CSV for each space.
None of this is a report format built to an auditor’s template. Write down what your auditor actually asks for, then check it against a trial before you commit to either product.
On Learnomy, enrolments, progress, quiz attempts and certificates are rows in your own WordPress database, on a server you choose. You can place it in your own region, back it up on your own schedule, and answer a deletion request with WordPress’s personal data tools: learner data is erased, while financial records are kept but unlinked from the person.
TalentLMS runs the platform for you. That is a benefit if you want a vendor to hold the infrastructure and the certifications, and a constraint if policy says records must stay on your own servers.
A new hire’s first week and what you take on
A new employee gets an email with a set-password link, logs in, and finds only the courses assigned to them, because nothing else is listed. Lessons open in a full-screen player with a progress bar, and the account area shows quiz results and certificates. There is no separate manager dashboard in Free, so a manager who wants to see their team’s progress needs a Pro roster, a Learning Space report or an export.
- Hosting, security patches, plugin updates and backups are yours.
- You decide who is the administrator and who the instructors are.
- There is no hosted course library; you bring the material or build it.
- You can script enrolment, because there is a REST API with JWT authentication and an incoming signed enrolment webhook.
- Learnomy has no built-in HR system sync.
When team seats matter
Pro adds Learning Spaces: a company buys a bundle of seats, a team owner invites people, and a seat limit stops overspending. Sub-groups inside a space can have group-only course access, and a member who falls behind on dues can be suspended and restored without losing their history. SCORM 1.2 and 2004 packages play in Pro, and xAPI statements can go to your learning record store.
Who should not switch
Choose TalentLMS if nobody in your company wants to run a server, if SSO is required, or if you want a vendor accountable for uptime and support. It is also the safer pick when the L&D team will manage the platform without any developer help.
Choose Learnomy if you already run WordPress, headcount makes per-learner pricing painful, or the data must stay on your own infrastructure.
Moving staff training across
There is no importer for TalentLMS. You rebuild the courses by hand, or script them against the REST API or WP-CLI.
- Export users, course assignments and completion records from TalentLMS.
- Rebuild one course in Learnomy Free, with its quiz and certificate.
- Set it to invite-only and unlisted.
- Upload the user CSV through bulk enrolment.
- If the material is SCORM, add Pro and upload the package.
- Keep the old records for audit, since progress does not travel in a CSV.
